So we’re back in lockdown. You\u2019ve completed your Netflix list and you\u2019re tired of talking about the news with your flatmate (and constantly refreshing coronavirus stats for your area).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t fret, there are still plenty of free things left to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve collated a list of 50 fun and free things to do using your internet connection or items you already have lying around to get you through days, weeks, or even months or boredom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Watch a film<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Netflix and Amazon Prime aren\u2019t your only options, and you don\u2019t necessarily have to pay for a subscription to watch plenty of excellent films.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Openculture has a great list of <\/span>1150 free films<\/span><\/a> you can watch online right now. If you have an eligible university or library card, you might also have access to <\/span>Kanopy<\/span><\/a> which offers thousands more film options for free. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. Watch a documentary\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re in the mood for something a bit more cerebral, there are a few websites that give you access to free documentaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re into sharks, revolutions, or serial killers, you\u2019ll find something interesting to watch. Some great sites include <\/span>Documentary Tube<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Top Documentary Films,<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Documentary Heaven<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Write a novel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Current technology means that you can explore other cities and even other times online, such as this <\/span>virtual tour of ancient Rome<\/span><\/a> which takes you through the forum, capitoline hill, and famous monuments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Write a play or short film<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Perhaps your work is better realised by actors rather than staying on the page? You\u2019ll be pleased to know that the <\/span>BBC is on the hunt for original scripts about self-isolation<\/span><\/a> that they can turn into short films.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New York\u2019s MoMA<\/span><\/a> is just one of the incredible galleries that you can visit from your own sofa, where you can enjoy Pollock and Monet without the crowds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

9. Explore the Uffizi<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you prefer Botticelli to Pollock, you can <\/span>tour the Uffizi<\/span><\/a> in Florence, arguably one of the best collections of Renaissance art in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can take your time looking at Botticelli\u2019s Birth of Venus, Caravaggio\u2019s Medusa, and Titian\u2019s Venus of Urbino without even getting on a plane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

10. Enjoy the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Experiencing these venues from your home does mean that you can visit multiple galleries from different countries or even different continents in the same afternoon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps once you\u2019ve enjoyed Florence, New York, and Paris, you can come to London to see the <\/span>Tate Britain<\/span><\/a> for free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although you\u2019ll miss out on the lovely river walk to the gallery, you can drop in at any time and see your favourite pieces from the comfort of your own home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The British Museum<\/span><\/a> is home to incredible artefacts from around the world and is still open to virtual visitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Exhibits that are usually packed are free to roam around at any time, so you can brush up on your Egyptian knowledge, see the controversial Parthenon Marbles, or just wile away a few hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

13. Go to 500 other museums or galleries\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re still looking for more galleries or museums to visit, <\/span>Google\u2019s arts and culture collection<\/span><\/a> has virtual tours of 500 top attractions around the world, including national galleries from around the world, individual artist museums, and even the Eiffel Tower.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

14. Have a karaoke night\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Missing karaoke night with your friends? You can still do it from home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apps like <\/span>AirConsole<\/span><\/a> let you turn your smartphone into a mic, and sing your favourite hits with the usual gang and practice new songs to sing at the bar once you feel like venturing out of the house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

15. Brush up on the latest publications<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve always been fascinated by academia or a specific area within it, this is a great time to read the latest publications and get up to speed on the latest developments with your area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JSTOR is allowing free access<\/span><\/a> to thousands of journals at the moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

16. Try a fitness challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Don’t fancy the gym (or the hefty membership)? There are plenty of fitness challenges you can try out from home, so you can work on your fitness without having to leave the house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New hobbies don\u2019t get much cuter than amigurumi – the Japanese art of crocheting small creatures or characters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a cheap hobby to start, and if you already have yarn lying around you can find plenty of free patterns online, like this one to create<\/span> a tiny Freddie Mercury.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

20. Cook something new\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You can find great recipes online, even if you\u2019re on a limited budget. <\/span>Jack Monroe\u2019s recipes<\/span><\/a> are specifically created for people on strict budgets or relying on food banks, while <\/span>Miguel Barclay <\/span><\/a>is best known for his one pound meals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

21. Play a board game<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Board game lovers will be pleased to know that there are ways to play your favourite games online, so you don\u2019t have to venture out to end to try out your new Scythe strategy or to finally play Terraforming Mars with a friend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Websites like <\/span>Tabletopia <\/span><\/a>have free accounts for players, but you may need to pay to play some of the more popular or newer games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

22. Learn a language<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Always wanted to speak <\/span>Italian<\/span><\/a>? Intrigued by <\/span>Norwegian<\/span><\/a>? Think that Mandarin will be useful for work, or perhaps <\/span>German<\/span><\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why not learn a new language? Online tools give you everything you need to help you brush up on vocabulary, and test out pronunciation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

23. Go to the aquarium<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s almost impossible to recreate the strange grace and tranquility of aquariums but not entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although they\u2019re closed to the public, Monterey Bay Aquarium have added a number of <\/span>live cams<\/span><\/a> to let you keep an eye on the jellyfish, kelp forest, coral reef, and even the penguins, completely free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

24. Visit the opera<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Escape from the news cycle by immersing yourself in the drama of an opera performance, without even leaving the house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the closure of non-essential businesses, multiple opera houses like the <\/span>Met Opera<\/span><\/a> have started streaming performances. Perfect if you\u2019re a long-time opera lover or even someone who\u2019s never been to the opera but has always been curious about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

25. Deep clean your house<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Between dusty skirting boards, dirty tiling, and stained carpets, your home can offer days of distraction if you feel like doing that deep clean you\u2019ve been putting off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are plenty of <\/span>online cleaning guides<\/span><\/a> if the task looks too big, and focusing on one room at a time will help you divide up the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

28. Scare yourself in a creepy library<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve always been fascinated by the inspiration for Lovecraft, horror films, and far too many conspiracy theories, you can now read <\/span>a library of 1,600 digitised horror and paranormal books online<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ritman Library has allowed free access to these pre-1900 books focused on alchemy, astrology, and magic, thanks to a generous donation from Dan Brown himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

29. Walk through Paris or London<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You can\u2019t jump on a plane, but you can still see some of the <\/span>world\u2019s most famous views thanks to Google street view<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Feast your eyes on Paris from the Sacre Coeur or take a look at the Thames from the top of the Shard. You can even take a walk along the river and see if Google\u2019s cameras captured anything unusual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

30. Watch a gig<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re itching to go to a gig or think you\u2019re going to miss festivals this summer, you can actually watch plenty of them on YouTube. Watch classics like <\/span>Nirvana Unplugged<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Radiohead\u2019s Glastonbury set in 1997<\/span><\/a>, or <\/span>Portishead accompanied by an orchestra<\/span><\/a> and enjoy your own personalised lineup.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Long walks and open scenery feels like a thing of the past, but you can still enjoy the view. You can now take <\/span>virtual tours of America\u2019s national park<\/span><\/a> (or parks a little closer to home).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

33. Go to the theatre<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When you can\u2019t go to the theatre, let the theatre come to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recorded performances are nothing new, but some platforms like <\/span>Marquee<\/span><\/a> are offering free trials so that you can see whether it\u2019s something you\u2019d want to watch on a more regular basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

34. Visit a mystery house<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Even more esoteric attractions are now offering virtual tours – you may not have heard of the <\/span>Winchester Mystery House<\/span><\/a>, but it\u2019s certainly one of the stranger homes that you can explore online.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Built by Sarah Winchester after receiving instructions from her deceased husband (and a changing cast of other ghosts), the former-7 storey mansion is an architectural oddity and has plenty for you to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

35. Have a work out<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Keeping active will make a big difference to how you feel mentally and physically – physical activity should help you sleep better and lift your mood, even if you\u2019re stuck in the same room for most of the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

True crime fans can immerse themselves in mysteries or even start solving them. There are plenty of online communities like <\/span>Reddit\u2019s Unresolved Mysteries<\/span><\/a>, where mystery fans get together to swap theories and combine information to try to get to the bottom of old cold cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

37. Volunteer\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Sometimes the best way to get out of your head is to help other people. You can volunteer from home in plenty of different ways such as becoming\u00a0<\/span>an online listener with schemes such as 7 Cups<\/a> to help other people through this tough time.<\/p>\n

38. Start a blog<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This could be a great time to build your audience, especially if you have relatively cheap, indoor hobbies that you can share.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

41. Understand nutrition<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Comfort eating is understandable, but won\u2019t help you enter summer happier and healthier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
